Austin‑Bergstrom International Airport marked the start of its Utilities Infrastructure Campus‑Wide (UICW) project with a groundbreaking ceremony on 19 October, signalling the next phase of its multibillion‑dollar expansion plan.
The UICW effort will replace and expand hidden drainage, power, water‑quality and communications networks across the airport, providing the backbone needed for larger terminal and runway projects already under way.
Key components include new storm‑water and water‑quality lines, detention ponds, redundant medium‑voltage electrical systems and extensive telecommunications duct banks, all designed to minimise service disruptions as passenger demand rises.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson highlighted that the investment prepares the airport for a projected 30‑35 million annual passengers once the broader Journey With AUS program is complete.
Airport chief Ghazlane Badawi added that the behind‑the‑scenes work will boost operational resilience, reliability and long‑term sustainability, even though travelers will not see the infrastructure directly.
Design work began in 2024; construction started in the autumn of 2026 and is slated to run through 2029, with Sundt Archer Western as the prime contractor and HDR as the designer.
Funding comes from airport cash reserves, future revenue bonds, and federal aviation grants, including roughly $10.1 million from the Airport Infrastructure Grants program and $6.1 million from the Airport Improvement Program.
