Over 30 former track stars participated in a symbolic run in Eldoret to mark Kenya Tourism Week and UN Tourism Day.

The run was led by celebrated Olympian Kipchoge Keino and organised jointly by the Ministry of Tourism, Uasin Gishu County government and the University of Eldoret.

Tourism Principal Secretary Julius Bitok flagged off the event, describing the legends as a powerful force for marketing Kenya’s sport tourism.

Why sport tourism is a priority for Kenya

Officials said the run aims to position Kenya as a secure and attractive destination for sport‑related travel, expanding the tourism narrative beyond wildlife and coastal attractions.

Keino echoed the message, urging promotion of sport tourism and noting that many visitors already come to see the “home of champions”.

Former marathon champion Leah Malot urged young athletes to engage in sport tourism while warning against doping, linking clean performance to the country’s reputation.

Linking Eldoret’s running heritage to broader tourism circuits

The run was designed to connect Eldoret’s North Rift sporting identity with tourism, culture and community experiences, showcasing training camps, facilities and local landscapes.

Tourism authorities have identified the region as a key area for new tourism circuits, aiming to diversify Kenya’s tourism menu beyond traditional wildlife and coastal routes.

Upcoming activities during Kenya Tourism Week

The symbolic run forms part of a week‑long programme in Eldoret from 21 to 27 September, featuring sports, culture, conservation, gastronomy, digital innovation and community‑based experiences.
