The government inaugurated the Amagoro ESP Market in Busia County on Sunday, October 4, marking the completion of the border‑area trading hub.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the facility is intended to boost economic activity and trade along the Kenya‑Uganda border.

The market comprises two single‑storey blocks that house 200 smart stalls, display areas, secure storage, offices and cold rooms for perishable goods.

Additional amenities include a revenue office, ICT hub, social hall, food court, ATM lobby and an accessible ablution block.

Phase one also integrates a fire station, mechanical lifts for heavy goods, standard sanitation blocks and a fish‑processing zone for 300 specialised traders.

Other facilities feature a day‑care centre, modern kitchens, an ICT hub and a youth community centre, aimed at supporting traders and the surrounding community.

The interior ministry estimates the market will eventually accommodate up to 7,000 traders across well‑ventilated, numbered multi‑level stalls.

Omollo highlighted that the modern hub will provide a safer, more organised trading environment and is expected to foster regional commerce at the key gateway.

The launch follows an update on the ongoing construction of Nairobi’s modern Gikomba market, where phases one and two are in the final stretch and phase three is at the superstructure stage.
