Airtel Money Kenya, through the Airtel Africa Foundation in partnership with ChildFund Kenya, has launched a Ksh 12.7 million infrastructure and hygiene upgrade at the Garissa School for the Deaf.
The project will add four new classrooms to reduce overcrowding and accommodate a growing student body.
A dedicated ICT centre will be built to provide digital literacy training and modern learning tools for the learners.
Separate sanitation blocks for boys, girls and teachers will be constructed, improving hygiene standards on campus.
The upgrade includes an extension of the municipal water pipeline and a 20,000‑litre storage tank on an elevated tower to ensure reliable clean water supply.
A 20‑point handwashing station will be installed to promote proper hygiene practices among students and staff.
Acting Managing Director of Airtel Money Kenya, Bonke Michael, said the initiative aims to remove systemic barriers faced by learners with special needs and create a safe, inclusive learning environment.
The Garissa upgrade forms part of a broader Ksh 62 million programme targeting more than 2,000 learners across four public schools in Baringo, Garissa and Wajir counties.
Garissa County’s Curriculum Support Officer for Special Needs Education, Fatuma Omar, highlighted that functional infrastructure is essential for effective curriculum delivery in special‑needs schools.
