The 1 GW battery storage plant planned for the Pulverdingen substation near Markgröningen has had its permitting application confirmed as complete, and the developer expects a building permit to be issued shortly.
When operational, the facility will be able to store up to 4 GWh of electricity and discharge at its full 1 GW rating for roughly four hours, depending on operating limits and battery utilisation.
The site sits within a 380‑kilovolt transmission hub that serves the wider Stuttgart region, with the high‑voltage network operated by TransnetBW and distribution infrastructure managed by Netze BW.
ADS‑TEC Energy will provide its proprietary battery‑management system, while European industrial suppliers are slated to deliver the batteries, switchgear, transformers and extra‑high‑voltage equipment required for the plant.
The storage facility is intended to bolster grid stability as Germany expands renewable generation, absorbing excess power when supply is high and releasing it during demand peaks or when the grid needs rapid support.
Construction has not yet started; upcoming milestones include securing the building permit, finalising financing and ownership structures, confirming suppliers and contractors, and advancing engineering and grid‑connection work, with a target grid‑connection date of 2029.
