Abdi Mohamed, who previously led Absa Bank Kenya, has been approved by the Central Bank of Kenya and formally took over as chief executive of I&M Bank Kenya on Monday, 5 October.
He succeeds Kihara Maina, who had been serving as interim chief executive and will now resume his duties as I&M Group regional chief executive.
The board highlighted Mohamed’s three‑decade banking career and his deep knowledge of Kenya’s financial sector as key assets for the bank’s next growth phase.
Mohamed’s mandate includes strengthening customer relationships, driving growth and overseeing the ongoing transformation of I&M’s Kenyan operations.
Beyond his new role, Mohamed chairs the UN Global Compact Network Kenya and sits on the governing council of the Kenya Bankers Association, linking the bank to broader industry initiatives.
He also holds board positions at Integrated Payment Services Limited, the operator of the PesaLink interbank transfer platform, and at Touch Health, underscoring his involvement in fintech and health‑tech sectors.
I&M Bank Kenya is a wholly owned subsidiary of I&M Group, a publicly listed company on the Nairobi Securities Exchange with operations across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Mauritius.
