AAR Insurance planted 27,500 mangrove seedlings in Majaoni, Mombasa, inaugurating the first phase of the 2026 cycle of its ‘A Tree, A Life’ initiative and its initial foray into coastal ecosystem restoration.

The planting follows two years of measurable impact, during which the programme has planted more than 96,000 trees nationwide with a 93 percent survival rate.

Overall, the initiative has now exceeded 123,500 trees planted across Kenya, creating 719 jobs focused on women and youth in host communities who raise seedlings, prepare land and tend young trees.

Implementation is coordinated with GS Sustainability Limited, the Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Medical Training College, county governments and other partner institutions, while sponsors such as Stanbic Bank, LRMG and ICEA LION support the current cycle.

Mangroves are highlighted for their role in shielding coastal communities from storm surges and erosion, supporting fisheries and storing more carbon than most forest types.

According to the Kenya Forest Service, Kenya’s coastline holds roughly 61,271 hectares of mangroves, though Mombasa has experienced notable loss of mangrove cover in recent decades.

AAR Insurance’s ESG framework, introduced in 2023 under the name INTENT, anchors ‘A Tree, A Life’ as its flagship environmental programme, pledging to plant one tree for every new policy issued.

Company officials, including Head of Internal Audit Caleb Maina, emphasized the ecological and livelihood benefits of mangroves and invited the Majaoni community to act as guardians of the new seedlings.

AAR Insurance committed to long‑term monitoring and after‑care, planning to track each seedling’s growth and to continue creating green jobs that link environmental restoration with sustainable livelihoods.

Further planting at other sites across Kenya is scheduled for later in the season, extending the programme’s reach beyond the coastal pilot.
