Detectives from the Land Fraud Investigations Unit have arrested a man accused of forging documents to take over a prime parcel of land in Karen worth Sh200 million.
The case started when a woman reported that she had bought the land from the rightful owner, who had died. The owner had inherited the property from her mother.
Detectives began investigations and found that the suspect, Benick Otieno Okombo, had created fake documents. One was a forged deed of gift. The other was a forged transfer of land. Both documents claimed that the land had been given to him by the deceased owner.
Investigators collected evidence and forwarded it to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The ODPP reviewed the file and approved charges of forgery and presenting false documents.
A manhunt was launched soon after. Detectives traced Okombo to Bruce House in Nairobi using forensic leads. He was arrested and is now being processed before he appears in court.
This case raises a question you should ask yourself. How safe is your land or the land you hope to buy?
The DCI says it will continue to pursue people who forge documents to steal property.
