The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has condemned recent acts of violence and harassment targeted at its members and supporters. According to a statement issued by the party, a group of armed individuals attempted to force their way into a private building at Kayole Junction on the evening of May 16, 2025. The building displayed a billboard bearing a message from the DCP, which the assailants allegedly aimed to destroy.
Security guards at the premises successfully repelled the attackers during the first attempt. However, later that night, another group of men dressed in police uniforms returned to the scene. Witnesses claimed the assailants overpowered the guards, accessed the fourth floor, and tore down the billboard promoting DCP’s leadership. The attackers reportedly said, “hao watu wako hapo wanapinga serikali,” indicating a politically motivated attack.
The incident was reported at Kariobangi Police Station. However, DCP members claim the officers’ initial response was dismissive and biased. According to the party, officers asked, “Wewe ndio umeweka hile picha kubwa ya Wamunyoro na Nyakera?” instead of addressing the criminal act.
Hon. Irungu Nyakera, CBS, the Patron of Team Kanairo and a key figure in DCP, condemned the attack as an assault on democratic rights and freedoms. He accused the attackers of using intimidation tactics to silence dissenting voices and undermine the party’s political message.
Nyakera called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable. He emphasized that Kenya must remain a country where political expression is protected and intimidation has no place in the democratic process.
The DCP’s statement highlights the growing concerns over political violence and abuse of power, especially during a period of heightened political tensions. The party insists that freedom of expression and political participation must be safeguarded to maintain a fair and democratic society.
